Diablo 4 Item Upgrades

The upgrade of an item lets players increase the level of their equippable items like trinkets, weapons, and armor above a certain threshold. You can upgrade items at any NPC that accepts the appropriate currency.

Upgrade components are inserted into equipment to give bonus effects and attribute bonuses. Most upgrades are slot-restricted but some are universal.

Rerolling

A player can reroll an item upgrade in Diablo 4. This is accomplished by using the Level Up feature, which pauses your game and displays four randomly selected upgrades. However, most upgrade components cannot be replaced or salvaged except through the use of an Upgrade Extractor. The only exception is glyphs. These are salvageable using the Black Lion Salvage Kit, or the Ascended Salvage tool.

Upgrading an item can cost gold and/or Dilithium depending on the item type. Many upgrades also require Flightstones or crests. The number of crests and Flightstones required to upgrade an item varies on the gear's level and the maximum upgrade level is established by Blizzard. Upgrades to the highest level can be costly, especially when upgrading PvE equipment.

The upgrades to items can also alter a weapon's ammunition type or size of the damage die and size, alter its operational or unwieldy specific weapon property, or change its hand requirement. Some upgrades can change the appearance of a weapon.

Before you make a decision it is important to be aware of the cost involved in upgrading an item. You may want to make use of your gold to upgrade rare items, but do not spend it on common or items of the magic-tier. Upgrading these items will waste valuable resources, and you'll discover that rare gear is superior to them.
